A landscape architect cannot honor the original designer's intent if the exact topographical grading, plant spacing, and hardscape joint tolerances have been lost to modern bulldozers.
All documentation submitted to the California registry must adhere to a rigid tri-partite structure: Historical Narrative, Measured Drawings, and Large-Format Photography. Digital-only submissions are considered fragile; therefore, all physical media must meet archival (500-year) stability standards.
The Tri-Partite Documentation Protocol
I. The Historical Narrative
A comprehensive written report detailing the site's chain of title, original landscape architect (if known), and the evolution of its use. This section must specifically detail how the landscape responds to California's unique environmental pressures, including historic drought cycles and the integration of local water rights.
II. Measured Drawings (Cartography)
Precise, to-scale drawings capturing the spatial relationships of the estate. While modern LiDAR and drone photogrammetry are acceptable for initial data capture, final submissions must be rendered in standard architectural formats (e.g., AutoCAD translated to archival vellum). Critical layers include topographical contours, hardscape boundaries, and a highly specific botanical inventory map.
III. Large-Format Archival Photography
Digital DSLR photography is insufficient for true archival longevity. HALSCA standards require black-and-white, large-format (4x5 or 5x7) film negatives. These must capture comprehensive contextual views, detailed macro shots of historic masonry joints, and the structural branching habits of heritage trees.
Pre-Intervention Requirements
Before any Technical Custodian is permitted to alter the soil profile or canopy of a documented site, the following conditions must be verified and logged with the archival division:
- Canopy Mapping: The drip-line of all heritage trees must be physically staked and mapped to prevent heavy machinery compaction.
- Hydrological Flow Analysis: Existing surface runoff directions must be documented to ensure post-intervention grading does not alter historical water capture.
- Material Forensics: Samples of historic mortar, decomposed granite, and adobe must be laboratory-tested to ensure exact aggregate matching during repairs.
